Andrew’s Story

It has been nearly 10 years since Quality Control Manager Andrew Canterbury graduated from Marshall University, and recently he was invited back to speak to a senior Civil Engineering class. Below is his inspiring story in his own words. From dropping out of high school, to graduating with an engineering degree, read on to learn how he is thriving in his career with Dawn Incorporated.

“It’s been almost a decade since I graduated from Marshall University, and this week I had the honor of being invited back by one of my favorite professors to speak to the senior Civil Engineering class. It was a huge honor, and honestly, I put a lot of thought into what I wanted to say. I didn’t go there to promote the construction company I work for, but I did want to share how much I genuinely enjoy what I do and the path that led me here. My goal was to give the students a different perspective, to show that there are many directions you can take with an engineering degree, even paths that look a little different from the traditional design or professional licensure route.

“Our president, Dawn, has built A CONSTRUCTION company that truly values people first. It feels like family.”

I shared my own story, from dropping out of high school and starting work in construction, to later going back to school, earning my engineering degree, and eventually building a career in federal construction. Along the way, I’ve had the chance to work with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, which taught me a lot about how government projects operate and helped make myself marketable in the private sector. That experience eventually led me to Dawn Incorporated, where I’ve found a role that really fits, combining my construction background with my engineering education. Dawn Incorporated has been more than just an employer; it’s been the right move for me. Our president, Dawn, has built a company that truly values people first. It feels like family. It’s a place where the first question is always about how my family’s doing before we even talk about work, and that kind of leadership really matters. I’m proud to be part of it.

Speaking to the students was a great experience. They were attentive, asked thoughtful questions, and made me feel like my story might have resonated. It felt good to be back on campus in Huntington, West Virginia, seeing the old buildings and remembering where it all started.”
